4 out of 5 stars
I started 2024 with a Ruth Galloway book and it seems fitting to read another at year's end. This volume ties right back to the beginning, when Leif Andersson, son of Erik from The Crossing Places, shows up and circumstances start to echo those past events. Nelson and Ruth start receiving creepy, vaguely threatening letters. Another young woman's body is found in Leif's archaeological site. But Erik is dead, isn't he? And Leif's appearance is a coincidence, right?
The reopened cold case is occupying Nelson's homicide team, but he must keep an eye on Michelle, his very pregnant wife. He finds that he wants all his children to know they are related which will involve telling his two daughters in their twenties that Kate is their half-sister, a dicey situation.
Griffiths doesn't just repeat her initial plot, she adds complications and new uncertainties. It is far from a repetition, although it has definite echoes from the past. I found myself staying up far past bedtime to see how it would pan out. The progress in the personal relationships also keeps me reading. The urge to binge the final few books is strong, but I am going to resist. I will be so sad when I have no more Ruth books left.
